Taylors of Harrogate To understand our business, you really need to know how we began. So prepare yourself to hear a story of two rebels who changed the face of Harrogate, of a family who overcame tragedy to set up one of the finest Tea Rooms in the World, of a business which has always been willing to take risks and challenge conventions - there's even a love interest along the way!

Rebel number one was a young Yorkshire man by the name of Charles Taylor. Charles started work in the tea trade in the same company as his brother but, unlike his brother, he was unemployed again within a year! His role had been buying and blending teas in the South West that grocers could promote as their own house blend, specially suited to the local water.

Charles had a natural flair for the role but he was also a headstrong young man who took a few risks in his determination to select the most suitable teas for his customers. One particular purchase was regarded by his employers as a risk too far and, in the ensuing disagreement, he lost his job. Undeterred, Charles decided to set up on his own.

Once again, his brother helped him and C. E. Taylor & Co, tea and coffee merchants, was born in 1886 in a small warehouse in Leeds Real success came, however, with the opening of Charles's 'Kiosk' shops. Coffee was roasted daily in the window with the delicious aroma tempting in the passers-by - and the exotic tea blends included one particularly suited to the local water.
