What Is Chai Tea?
Chai Tea (rhyming with tie), is an old beverage which is originally from India. It is traditionally a spiced milk tea and spices used can vary depending on where you get it from. However, the most traditional are cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and pepper. With the increase in popularity, new Chai experiences have popped up like iced versions, milkshakes, chocolate flavour, lattes etc.

It could help to fight high blood pressure and lower your cholesterol and help boost your immune system. Not only this, but Chai Tea is packed full to the brim with powerful antioxidants to give your body all the help it needs. The fact that it tastes yummy is a great added bonus. So, if you fancy a hot, spicy and exotic beverage, then get your hands on a Chai Tea.
Making Your Own
Feeling a bit adventurous? If so, why not consider trying to make your own chai? All that you will need to make this popular recipe is:
- 1 1/2 cups of water
- 1 1/2 inch stick of cinnamon
- 8 cardamom pods
- 8 whole cloves
- 1/4 inch fresh ginger root (sliced thin)
- 2/3 cup of milk
- 6 teaspoons sugar
- 3 teaspoons of Darjeeling tea leaves
Put the water, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and ginger into a pot and bring it all to the boil. Then cover it and simmer for around ten minutes. Once this is completed, add the sugar and the milk and simmer again, adding the tea leaves. Take off the heat and cover it, leaving it to steep for around 3 minutes. Then all you need to do is strain it all off and sit back and take a tea break!
